What is Oral Toxicology? And What Does It Detect?
Oral Toxicology Testing is designed to detect and identify various legal and illegal drugs in one’s system. This is the least invasive form of drug screening and is highly effective at detecting recent drug use. Although Oral Toxicology is uncommon, it offers an alternative method of drug screening. This test carries the same purpose as a Urine Toxicology.
Urine Toxicology is more common for drug of abuse screening and confirmation. However, Oral Toxicology can be used if a patient is unable to produce enough urine for a Urine Toxicology.
The test is carried out with a collection device, an oral fluid drug test kit. The collection process of this test is very quick. The patient simply puts the device under their tongue to collect a saliva sample.
There are two tests for Oral Toxicology, one is for screening and the other is for confirmation. The screening test provides a basic positive or negative answer regarding a patient having drugs in their system. Whereas the confirmation test can determine the dosage amount in a patient’s system.
The confirmation test uses an analysis technology called Liquid Chromatography-mass Spectrometry (LC-MS). The machine is incredibly sensitive and requires extensive training before use. Reading The Results:
For Screening tests, the drug testing kit results will either be Positive or Negative. A negative result will appear if drugs are detected below the cutoff value. Whereas a positive result will appear if drugs are detected above the cutoff value.
A result is Negative if a red colored line appears in the control region of the test. The color and density of this red line may vary. If no red line appears at all, then the result is Positive. It should be noted that a red line should appear in the control region to indicate the test is performing how it should.
All in all, if two red lines are present then the test is accurate and provided a negative result. However, if no red lines appear at all then the test may need to be carried out again for accuracy.
For Confirmation testing, the results are a quantity of how much a specific drug is in a patient’s system.
What Do We Test For?

What is the Purpose of Oral Toxicology?
These tests can be required for a number of reasons. If you are recovering from an addiction, your doctor may order these tests every now and again to ensure you are on track for your recovery. Urine Toxicology is another method commonly used for this purpose.
There are certain drugs that stay in your system longer than others, however, oral toxicology reports are best done within 24-48 hours after drugs have been inserted into your system.
There are two main reasons people do these tests. One reason is curiosity. For example, an employer may want to know if a potential candidate is a drug addict or not. Additionally, parents may be concerned for their children’s safety and want them to take this test. Finally, you may just want to take this test for your own curiosity.
The Second purpose of this test is if a patient is prescribed/takes medication. For example, if a patient needs to have surgery done, they may be offered certain kinds of pain relief. However, if they currently have a prescription, an Oral Toxicology may need to be carried out to determine which drugs are already in their system. This is for safety reasons to ensure the patient does not have an adverse reaction to the drugs.
These tests can also determine if a patient is misusing a drug prescription. There are certain drugs you can only receive through a prescription, and some of these drugs can affect how a patient behaves. These tests can determine whether or not a patient is taking the drugs they have been prescribed.
